Superior MAKROLON® Polycarbonate Sheet for Architectural Security Glazing Detailed in New Voice-Over CD

Sheffield, MA—May 1, 2007—The outstanding qualities and many architectural and security glazing applications of MAKROLON® Polycarbonate Sheet, a product of Sheffield Plastics Inc., a Bayer MaterialScience Company, are highlighted in a new voice-over CD. As many businesses have already discovered, MAKROLON Sheet is durable and many times stronger than glass or acrylic while still offering superior clarity. This CD describes how MAKROLON offers many varieties of their high-quality product in order to fit a wide range of glazing needs. Options are categorized into four sections: MAKROLON AR (Abrasion Resistant), MAKROLON SL (Solar Resistant), MAKROLON HYGARD® CG (Containment Grade), and MAKROLON HYGARD BR (Bullet Resistant). This handy and easy to use CD helps industry professionals determine which MAKROLON option is ideal for particular architectural and security glazing needs. It also details the benefits, versatility, and ordering specifications for each product.

The first section covers MAKROLON AR products, which offer a glass-like surface hardness with enhanced resistance to yellowing and hazing, resulting in a longer surface life. MAKROLON AR has excellent UV resistance and demonstrated abrasion resistance over two times harder than the nearest competitive grade (Taber Abrasion Test ASTM 1044-99). MAKROLON AR also comes with a limited seven-year warranty. MAKROLON AR-1 offers protective coating on one side, while MAKROLON AR-2 is coated on both sizes. For situations where a monolithic polycarbonate sheet is required in security applications, MAKROLON AR500 meets ASTM 1915 Grade 3 standards, while MAKROLON AR375 is certified HPWTR05000.02 Level 1.

Next, this voice-over CD discusses MAKROLON SL, an enhanced UV resistant polycarbonate sheet that has a co-extruded UV cap. MAKROLON SL is easily thermoformed, fabricated and decorated, and it is ideal for overglazing, skylights, and other exterior uses. It offers exceptional weatherability and impact strength and is available in clear and a variety of colors. MAKROLON SL also comes with a limited 10-year warranty against breakage, excessive yellowing and loss of light transmission.

Next, the CD discusses three MAKROLON HYGARD CG products suited for various securityapplications. CG375 is a 2-ply sheet made from two 3/16” MAKROLON AR-1 sheets with a polyurethane center layer. CG500 is a 3-ply sheet made with two 1/8” MAKROLON AR-1 sheets, along with a 1/4” MAKROLON OP (Optically Clear) center layer. CG750 is also a 3-ply sheet with two 1/8” AR-1 outer layers, but its center layer contains a 1/2” MAKROLON OP sheet. Both CG375 and CG500 are used for architectural security glazing and specialty vehicle glazing, while CG750 is ideal for higher-level security applications. All varieties are abrasion and UV resistant and offer a limited 7-year warranty, and security ratings are listed according to product.

The final section in this CD covers three varieties of MAKROLON HYGARD BR laminates, suited for high-security applications and organized according to security rating.BR750 is a 3-ply polycarbonate and acrylic sheet, made with two 1/8” MAKROLONAR-1 sheets and a 1/2” acrylic center. It has an enhanced attack ratingdue to the acrylic core’s ability to absorb and diffuse the energy of a bulletupon impact. Both BR1000 and BR1250 are four-ply polycarbonate laminates offeringtwo MAKROLON OP layers for increased bullet resistance with exceptional clarity. Both contain two outer layers of 1/8” MAKROLON AR-1, but BR1000 alsohas two center layers made from 3/8” MAKROLON OP. BR1250 features two centerlayers made from 1/2” MAKROLON OP. All three BR products come with a limited7-year warranty and offer abrasion and UV resistance.

The CD also offers a comprehensive list of product options and general information. Topics include weight per pallet and standard options for masking, gauges, sizes, tolerances and colors. In addition, it includes a Specifications and Tools section, which lists links to learn more about testing and specifying architectural glazing materials.
